A traditional Jewish dish--just brown the meat and add all the ingredients to your crock pot.
Brown meat on all sides and remove from pan.
Saute onions, garlic and celery in meat drippings.
Add additional oil if needed.
Use some of the water to release pan drippings and add to crock pot.
Put meat, onion mixture, potatoes, carrots and beans in to crock pot in that order.
Add seasoning, all liquids, then add the barley.
Cover and cook on medium for 8-10 hours.
Notes:
This is a traditional Jewish dish.
It can be served thin, by adding more water or thick by cooking until most of the liquid has been absorbed.
This dish can also be made with dark meat chicken or with no meat at all but add more garbanzo beans and more barley.
