Sperr's Italian Meat Sauce


This pasta sauce contains sausage, ground beef, onions, tomatoes, tomato sauce and paste. Seasoned with garlic, herbs, beef broth and red wine.



Ingredients:

  • 1 Pound Hot Italian Sausage (pre-bake at 350 degrees and then slice lengthwise into strips or cut crosswise into chunks)
  • 1 Pound Lean Ground Beef (pre-brown, drain of fat)
  • 1 1/2 Large Yellow Onions (diced)
  • 1 Bunch (approx. 12) green onions, well-cleaned and chopped, including the white roots
  • 1 28 oz can of Diced Tomatoes
  • 24 oz Tomato Sauce
  • 18 oz Tomato Paste
  • 8 Cloves Garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons Basil
  • 2 Tablespoons Oregano
  • 1 Tablespoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Pepper
  • 3/4 Teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1/2 Cup Beef Broth
  • 1/2 Cup Red Wine
  • 1/4 Cup Italian Bread Crumbs

Method

Add all ingredients to large crock pot, mix and cook on high for 6 hours, stirring occasionally.

Notes: I just made this on Easter and left it cooking while I went to my parents'. Talk about a really, really nice aroma when I walked into my apartment a few hours later! Makes about 3.5 quarts of sauce, plenty of servings and will freeze well.
